1 March - 30 March 2002
The Lisa Coscino Gallery
is pleased to announce the opening of two new solo exhibitions. The Main
Gallery will feature the work of Sacramento artist Bud Gordon in an exhibition
entitled textures. The Front Gallery will feature an exhibition by local
artist Robin Sawyer entitled from the ground up. The exhibitions will
open on Friday, March 1st, 2002 and continue through March 30th. The artist
reception will be held on Friday, March 1st from 6-8pm. The artists will
be present. The Gallery is located at 171 Central Avenue in Pacific Grove.
BUD GORDON: textures will feature a variety of work in different mediums;
oil, charcoal and watercolor. While the subject matter of Gordon's work
is as varied as his mediums, his interest in the surface and in texture
is what unites this body of work. Having studied with such masters as
Wayne Thiebaud and Manuel Neri, Gordon has spent the last several years
exploring how artwork can engage the viewer by creating surface interest.
It is Gordon's belief that a painting should be interesting close-up as
well as from a distance and this body of work exemplifies this beautifully.
With the use of camouflage techniques as well as by tearing the paper
pieces, Gordon has created two pieces of art in one: at a distance the
work looks realistic and almost photographic while close up the work dissolves
into abstraction.
ROBIN SAWYER: from
the ground up will feature all new paintings which use archetypal images
that are basic to life. These archetypes are elemental (peasants, bowls
of food, horses) and closer to the land than we are. They make us think
of the bounties of the earth and her riches as well as the strength of
those who nurture the land and deliver its bounty to us. It is Sawyer's
belief that we have become disassociated with the process by which we
bring food to our tables and these paintings are her homage to the beauty
of those who partake in the land. Living in Carmel Valley, Sawyer was
recently chosen for the Award of Excellence in Painting by Cathy Kimball
of the San Jose ICA at the MMA exhibition this past fall which Kimball
juried.
