This exhibition will feature the work of several contemporary Mexican artists. The artists included are: Carlos Almaraz (Los Angeles), Isaac Ambriz (Valle de Bravo, Mexico), Carlos Bueno (Mazatlan), Alfredo de Batuc (Los Angeles), Roberto Gil de Montes (San Francisco) and Jorge Llaca (Mexico City). All of the artists were born in Mexico, some of the artists live and work in Mexico and some of them have migrated to the United States. The idea, then, is to show the influence/effect of American culture on Mexican art. The caliber of artist
in this show is remarkable: Carlos Bueno was one of the founding artists at Self-Help Graphics in Los Angeles in the 1970's. He also is a well known muralist, with murals in Los Angeles, Nevada, Mazatlan, and San Jose. Carlos Almaraz (deceased) was included in the extremely important exhibition curated by the Corcoran Gallery of American Art in Washington D.C.and The Museum of Fine Arts in Houston entitled "Hispanic Art in the United States". Almaraz was also a founding member of Los Four. Roberto Gil de Montes was also included in the Corcoran show and among other things was one of the founders of LACE (Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions), a non-profit artists' co-op. Isaac Ambriz is one of the most sought after artists collected by the elite of Mexico City. Alfredo de Batuc's work is in the permanent collections of LA County Museum, Laguna Art Museum and the Museo Estudio Diego Rivera in Mexico City. His mural featuring Dolores Del Rio is at the northeast corner of Hollywood Blvd. and Hudson Street. Jorge Llaca is one of Mexico City's premier installation artists. The exhibition will open on May 4th and will continue through June 16th. I am planning an Art Talk for May 5th where several of the artists will be present to talk about their work, etc.. I think that this will be both an exciting and educational exhibition; one that you would not typically have a chance to see in our small niche in the world. Lisa Coscino |
