The Lisa Coscino Gallery is pleased to announce the opening of it's
new exhibitions. The Main Gallery will feature the work of Frank Romero
in a show entitled "Cars and Hearts", the Mid Gallery will
feature the work of Sharon Dabney in a show entitled "Tarts"
and the in the Back Gallery we will be presenting a group show entitled
"Cheap Shots: Toy Camera Photography". The exhibitions open
on Friday, April 1st and will continue through May 7th. There will
be a reception on Friday, April 1st from 6-8pm. The Gallery is located
at 216 Grand Avenue in Pacific Grove.
LA
based artist, Frank Romero's exhibition will feature both paintings
and prints, the subject matter being two of his favorite things:
cars and hearts. Romero, one of the original members of Los Four,
a Chicano Art Collective, was one of the featured artists in the
1984 Olympics which were held in Los Angeles. Best known for his
depictions of cars in traffic, on freeways and in shootouts, Romero
is in the permanent collections of the LA County Museum, the Carnegie
Museum, the Smithsonian Museum of American Art and longtime Chicano
Art Collector, Cheech Marin. Romero's work was featured in the recent
20th Anniversary Celebration at the Monterey Bay Aquarium. This
will be Romero's first show in the area.
Also from LA, Sharon
Dabney has been painting and working with Romero for the last 10
years. This body of work was influenced by Romero and Dabney's travels
to Paris and Dabney's fondness for French pastries. Each painting
depicts pastries she found in Paris bakeries set on a background
of antique doilies. Dabney has captured the delicate and beautiful
balance that exists between the presentation and enjoyment of something
delicious.
This month in
our Back Gallery, we have curated an exhibition of photography taken
with a variety of toy cameras. Toy camera photography is a unique
and interesting appendage of other forms of fine art photography,
appealing to a select group of artists who enjoy the mystery of
the unknown in the images that these toy cameras produce. The show
will feature the work of both local photographers as well as photographers
from LA, Mexico, Australia, Virginia and England. The images that
toy cameras produce are varied, mysterious and often funny or ironic.
