The Lisa Coscino Gallery announces the opening of its new exhibition entitled "REFLECTIONS / celebrating death". The exhibition will open on Friday, November 2nd and run through December 8th, 2001. The Artist Reception will be held on Friday, November 2nd from 6-8 pm. Funeral attire is suggested. The Gallery is located at 171 Central Avenue in Pacific Grove. "REFLECTIONS / celebrating death" will feature a mixed media installation on the theme of Dia de los Muertos by Mexico City installation artist Jorge Llaca. Llaca, previously included in the Gallery's Contemporary Mexican Artist exhibition, is one of Mexico City's premier installation artists. He has created installations for CENART, Anahuac University, the Ibero-American University and Gallery El Reloj. For this exhibition, Llaca will be loosely interpreting the celebration of Dia de los Muertos or Day of the Dead, which in Mexican culture is truly a celebration of death. Through a series of 'death portraits' of living individuals set into boxes, Llaca will allow the viewer to question his/her own death in life. The expectation is that this installation will prove to be a reflective exercise where identity and fragility are reflected in these boxes in a somewhat playful way. This will not be a literal interpretation of Day of the Dead, but a much more profound and provocative idea: the reflection of an individual's experience through a game of boxes, candles, lights and sounds combined with images of the 'living-dead'. Also included as part of this exhibition celebrating death will be a
variety of small works by local artists including Richard Pitnick and
Juan Carlos Elizondo.
