Los Ojos del Mar: A Celebration of Twenty Years: Monterey Bay Aquarium

This exhibition of artwork by Contemporary Latino Artists living and working in the state of California has been curated by Lisa Coscino and will be on view on the Main Floor of the Monterey Bay Aquarium beginning October 23rd, 2004. The exhibition will continue through the first of the new year.

The inspiration for "Los Ojos del Mar" is the history itself of the Monterey Peninsula. Originally part of Spain before becoming part of Mexico, the Peninsula has deep roots in the Latino Community which this show acknowledges. Throughout history, Latino Culture, whether in writing, music, dance or fine art has been rich in folklore related to the ocean and its beautiful and mysterious inhabitants. The artwork presented in this exhibition is as varied as the individuals who created it. Spain, Mexico, Chile and Puerto Rico as well as the United States are just some of the birthplaces of the artists included in this show. "Los Ojos del Mar" is a celebration of the many ways of interpreting the ocean and its creatures through the eyes of the artists for who the sea remains a source of inspiration.

All artwork will be available for purchase through the Lisa Coscino Gallery.

Southern California artist, Patricia Prescott graduated from Art Center in 1985. Focussing most of her career as a Graphic Designer, Prescott went back to painting two years ago. In this short period of time, she has attained much success. Her previous show at the gallery, "Fruitscapes" sold out. In "Skyscapes" Prescott continues painting in the style she has become noted for: a combination of old world technique and contemporary imagery. This body of work is comprised of pared down, idealized skies with a faint reference to land. There is a tension between the medium and the imagery and this tension is what makes the paintings so interesting.

David Molesky is a 26 year old artist who moved to the Peninsula last winter from Seattle. He grew up on the East coast and graduated from UC Berkeley in '99. Since then he has been painting full time in the classical vein and has been exhibiting his paintings on both coasts.

David is drawn to mythological figures especially those associated with nature. In this pursuit, he has become almost obsessed with Pan, the classical archetype of the outsider figure. The ideal of Pan alone and deeply connected to nature strikes an autobiographical cord with Molesky. Traditionally, the hub of Pan’s worship was in the territory of Peloponnese, the land known as Arcadia. Shepherds and hunters, lone figures in nature themselves, made offerings to Pan in hope that he would increase the fertility of the livestock and game. The Hellenistic period brought tales of Pan unlucky in love with nymphs and in later periods the pastoral poets Theocritus and Virgil wrote of unrequited love in idealized Arcadia. Pan, like painting, has become an age old mirror reflecting the human condition while reminding humanity of their connection to nature.
