  MINIMALISM: 28 September - 27 October 2001

The Lisa Coscino Gallery announces the opening of its new exhibition entitled "MINIMALISM". The exhibition will open on Friday, September 28th and run through October 27th. There will be on opening reception on Friday, September 28th from 6-8pm. The Gallery is located at 171 Central Avenue in Pacific Grove.

"MINIMALISM" will feature the work of five seminal Minimalists from the 1960's and 70's. The artists featured include Carl Andre, Joseph Kosuth, Sol LeWitt, Robert Rauschenberg and Richard Tuttle. The co-curator of the exhibition is Burnett Miller, a private art dealer based in Beverly Hills and former owner of Burnett Miller Gallery in Los Angeles, which specialized in minimal art. Mr. Miller is also a former curator of the San Diego Museum of Art, La Jolla. In addition to the classic works represented, the gallery will feature the work of two contemporary minimalists; local painter Lucas Blok and New York artist Glen Seator.

The nine pieces making up the show will be presented in an austere environment designed to highlight the simplicity of the pieces. In this setting, the viewer is integral to the work. Reacting against the formal excesses of Abstract Expressionism, the minimalists of the 1960's focused attention on the object as object, reducing form and expressive content to its essence: the bare minimum. Many of the minimal artists were sculptors concerned with reduction and simplicity of form; incorporating factory finishes, flat surfaces and industrial materials as well as taking sculpture from a primarily vertical orientation to the horizontal. This shift in orientation allowed the viewer to walk through and under; in essence, to react to and to respond to the work itself. Another aspect of minimalism was the use of serial repetitions. Minimal art continues to challenge the viewer's awareness of object and space, and for the artist, the role of the viewer is paramount. Artists such as Carl Andre and Sol LeWitt are considered to be pioneers of the movement which in turn gave rise to process art, earthworks, performance art and the conceptual movement.

All work in this exhibition is museum quality. This show provides a unique opportunity for residents of the Peninsula and surrounding area to see historical pieces typically seen only in major metropolitan museums.
